Metal Allergies and Body Jewelry: What You Need to Know

Writer: Brian MoellerBrian Moeller

Metal allergies are a common issue for many people, especially when it comes to body jewelry. If you’ve ever experienced redness, itching, swelling, or irritation around a piercing, the metal in your jewelry might be to blame. But not all metals are created equal! Understanding what materials are safe—and which ones to avoid—can make a huge difference in comfort, healing, and long-term wear.

Why Metal Quality Matters with Allergies and Body Jewelry

Not all metals are pure, and the quality of your jewelry depends on where and how it’s made. Lower-grade metals often contain trace amounts of nickel or other irritants, which can cause allergic reactions or slow down healing. That’s why at our studio, we only use implant-grade titanium, 14k gold from trusted sources, L316 stainless steel, and niobium—materials that are proven safe for piercings.

Not All Titanium Is the Same

Titanium is often recommended for new piercings because it’s lightweight, strong, and completely nickel-free. However, not all titanium is safe for body piercings.

Many places sell titanium jewelry, but if it’s not implant-grade ASTM F136 titanium, it could contain impurities or have a rough surface finish, which can cause irritation. Low-quality titanium (like industrial-grade) may not be polished properly, leading to micro-scratches that harbor bacteria. That’s why it's important to buy from reputable sources that use implant-certified titanium.

The Truth About 14k Gold

Gold is a classic choice for jewelry, but just because something is labeled "14k gold" doesn’t mean it’s automatically safe. Gold is mixed with other metals to give it strength, and if you don’t know where it’s coming from, it could contain traces of nickel, zinc, or other irritants.

We only use solid, high-quality 14k gold from trusted sources to ensure it’s safe for wear. Cheaper gold jewelry—especially mass-produced pieces—can sometimes be recycled with mystery metals mixed in. Always choose body jewelry from a professional studio or a reputable brand to avoid unwanted allergens.

Why We Use L316 Stainless Steel & Niobium

  • L316 Stainless Steel: This is a high-quality surgical steel that is commonly used for body jewelry. When properly polished and finished, it is considered safe for most people who don’t have extreme sensitivities.

  • Niobium: A fantastic alternative for those with metal allergies. It’s hypoallergenic, corrosion-resistant, and can be anodized to create unique colors without any harmful coatings or plating. Niobium is a great option for anyone who struggles with sensitivities to other metals.

Why Silver Isn’t Ideal for Piercings

Sterling silver is beautiful, but it’s not the best choice for body piercings. While silver is great for rings, bracelets, and necklaces, it tarnishes over time, which means it can oxidize when exposed to moisture (like sweat or body fluids). This oxidation can cause discoloration, irritation, or even a reaction in your piercing.

If you love silver, stick to external jewelry like rings and necklaces—but avoid wearing it in fresh piercings or internally where it’s exposed to constant moisture.

Final Thoughts

Choosing the right jewelry is just as important as choosing the right piercer. At our studio, we take metal quality seriously and only offer implant-grade titanium, solid 14k gold from trusted sources, L316 stainless steel, and niobium to ensure our clients have the safest and most comfortable experience.
